Program objectives

  • Name three interpersonal relationship skills that help mentally ill residents feel understood.
  • Identify appropriate healthcare worker responses for two common symptoms exhibited with schizophrenia.
  • Describe three nursing interventions for residents with bipolar disorder.
  • Describe three interventions for residents with personality disorder who display manipulative behavior.

Caring for Residents with Mental Illness in the Nursing Home

Program Disclosures

The Purpose Of This Independent Study:  At the completion of this independent study, the learner will be able to recognize behavioral symptoms of mental illness in nursing home residents and intervene appropriately.

Program objectives

For successful completion of this continuing nursing education activity, participants must do all of the following:

  • Watch the entire program.
  • Successfully complete the post-test; passing score is 80%.
  • Submit the completed evaluation form.
  • Complete the electronic CNE Request.

Presence or absence of conflict of interest for planners and presenters:

Marci Pederson, RN, BSN, has 26 years experience in psychiatric nursing, including 10 years as Head Nurse in both acute care and psychiatric rehabilitation, 1+ year assessing nursing home residents for need for mental health services, and 15 years experience as Utilization Review Coordinator for psychiatric admissions.  She also has 2 years experience as Director of Nursing Education for nursing students participating in an eight week psychiatric program, and 5+ years as educator for Avera Education and Staffing Solutions.  All information presented in this continuing nursing education activity by Ms. Pederson has been done fairly and without bias.

All individuals involved in the planning and presenting of this program attest that they have no conflict of interest, including no relevant financial relationships with any commercial companies pertaining to this CNE activity.

There is no commercial company or sponsor support for this CNE activity.

This educational activity provides .55 contact hours for continuing nursing education upon successful completion, and expires December 31, 2014.
