Additional information about our vascular services.

Leg pain is not necessarily part of the aging process. Please don’t dismiss it. If you or someone you know is experiencing cramping or tiredness in the leg muscles when walking or climbing stairs, it could be peripheral arterial disease (PAD), a common, yet serious condition.

What causes PAD?

PAD occurs when arteries, especially in the lower legs, become clogged with cholesterol and other fats from the bloodstream. This limits blood flow and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. However, detection and treatment can reduce symptoms, restore mobility, and improve quality of life.

Most people with PAD have one or more habits or medical issues that increase their risk for heart and vascular disease. They include smoking, diabetes, and high blood pressure or cholesterol.

How is PAD detected?

The good news is that PAD is easy to detect. Non-invasive, painless tests are used to determine whether or not you have it. Avera Heart Hospital's screening program, Planet Heart, offers a peripheral arterial disease screening. You will be asked to remove your socks and shoes. The technologist will be placing blood pressure cuffs on your upper arms and ankles.

How is PAD treated?

If you are diagnosed with PAD, a personal treatment plan will be developed based on your medical history and the severity of your condition. Treatment may include lifestyle modification, medication, and in some cases, procedures to improve blood circulation and your abililty to walk.

The Avera Heart Hospital is a leader in vascular care and innovation. Our physicians are experienced in all aspects of vascular diagnosis, intervention and surgery. We now offer a new state-of-the-art hybrid robotic vascular lab.
