Emergency Services

The Emergency Department at Hegg Memorial Health Center Avera is comprised of board certified medical professionals and registered nurses, experienced in treating patients with emergency conditions. Our goal is to offer the best possible patient care and customer service. We are committed to this goal and to exceeding your expectations.

Emergency Room Procedure

Upon arrival, a registered nurse will see you. This is the beginning of your medical treatment. The nurse will ask the reason for your visit, inquire about your medical history and perform a brief exam.

Treatment

You will now be seen by a certified emergency care provider. Your nurse may start an IV, obtain a blood or urine sample or send you for an X-ray if necessary. Evaluation in the Emergency Department may take up to three hours, or longer if specialized tests are needed.

Re-Evaluation

Once all of your test results are received, the Emergency Department physician will reevaluate you. Based on these results and your condition, you may either be discharged home or be admitted into the hospital or transferred to a larger care facility if immediate specialty care is needed.

Discharge

When you are discharged from the Emergency Department you will be given written after-care instructions to follow at home. Once you return home, it is very important to follow-up with your private physician or the referral physician that was given to you.

We know no one wants to be a patient in the Emergency Department and that patients and their families may be upset or frightened by their illness or injury. You are in good hands. Our staff is highly trained to provide the best medical care available. If you have any questions after discharge, or if there is anything more we can do for you, please feel free to call 712-476-8040.
