Community Art Wall in the Prairie Center

The Prairie Center, home of the Avera Cancer Institute and Avera Surgery Center, is a place that provides not only hope for our patients, but also a place that welcomes and engages our community. We listened to what our patients wanted in a building—from architectural design to what style of artwork is in a waiting room. Avera McKennan understands and embraces the healing power of art and is excited to unveil a new inspirational show on the digital community art wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's a digital media art gallery?
A: Our digital media art gallery, the first of its kind in our region, is a 15-screen collection of large high-definition video screens. It was designed so that any kind of art could be displayed and shared with our community.  Since virtually all art mediums including sculptures, paintings, etc. can be photographed and displayed digitally, we felt this offered great flexibility for so many artists.

Q: Does my art have to be originally created as a digital piece?
A: No. Your art should simply be photographed so that we can show it on our digital screens. Read the information on this site to learn how submissions work.

Q: Why did Avera invest in a digital media art gallery?
A: As a regional health care leader, Avera understands that it takes more than medicine to bring healing to the whole person – body, mind and spirit.  We believe the arts play a critical role in the health and lives of our patients, staff and the community. The digital media art gallery offers great flexibility to showcase themed art, survivor stories, and many special interest topics.

Q: What's the benefit to the artist in submitting works for the juried show?
A: Since the work is submitted electronically, the artist does not need to worry about shipping, possible damage or insurance as one typically does with a traditional show. The art will have exposure on Avera's website, promotional materials and of course to the many visitors to the Prairie Center on the Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center campus.

Q: How many shows will be on display throughout the year and what are the themes?
A: We anticipate four shows per year with themes being selected approximately eight weeks prior to the submittal deadline. Sign up to receive e-mails about the themes at

Q: How do I submit a piece?
A: Art is submitted digitally using a submission form on this site. Please check back for updates on our next show and dates for your submission.

Q: How will I be notified if my piece was selected?
A: You will receive an e-mail from at least two weeks prior to the opening.
