Healing Power of Art

2013 National Arts Project Avera McKennan Art Exhibit

People’s Choice Award

People’s Choice winner illustrates God’s loving watch-care

Elaine Alpers - 2013 People's Choice“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31.

Only in the past couple years, when Elaine Alpers took a college drawing class, did she discover a love and aptitude for art. This year, Elaine took home the People’s Choice award from the Avera Employee & Family Art Show.

Elaine received the most votes for her artwork titled, “Matthew 10:29-31 Series.” It is a mixed media, drawn on burned wood. “The main idea is that God remembers us and loves us even when we feel insignificant and unworthy,” Elaine said. While the burned wood represents illness and death, the image of a bird in flight represents new life and hope. “God values each of us, including the sick and dying.”

Elaine, a junior at the University of Sioux Falls, is the daughter of Dr. Josie Alpers of Avera Medical Group Radiology. When Elaine took a drawing class in college, she enjoyed it so much she changed her major to art and graphic design. “I enjoy the whole spectrum of art,” she added. Elaine volunteers with the Avera Cancer Institute’s Artist in Residence program, working with cancer patients on therapeutic art projects.

Congratulations, Elaine, and thanks for entering the Avera Employee & Family Art Show!

Congratulations to winners of the Avera Employee and Family Art Show. A reception and awards ceremony was held Monday, July 22, in their honor. Prize money is provided by the National Arts Program, which sponsors the show. The NAP and Avera McKennan Foundation also provided two $500 scholarships for continuing art education.
