Employment of radiologic technologists is expected to increase by about 21% from 2012-2022, faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As the population grows and ages, there will be an increasing demand for diagnostic imaging. In addition to job growth, job openings also will arise from the need to replace technologists who leave the occupation. Those with knowledge of more than one diagnostic imaging specialty, such as CT, MRI, and mammography, will have the best employment opportunities as employers seek to control costs by using multi-credentialed employees. Demand for radiologic technologists can tend to be regional with some areas having large demand, while other areas are saturated. Technologists willing to relocate may have better job prospects. Besides full time positions, there are often opportunities for part time and on call work.

Employment opportunities exist in various settings. A radiographer may be employed in the radiology departments of hospitals, physicians’ offices, imaging centers, urgent care clinics, and other health care facilities. There are also opportunities in industry, public health services, college health services, mobile imaging companies, government agencies, and commercial sales. Training in this profession allows an individual to specialize in their area of choice, or pursue careers as educators, researchers, consultants or administrators.

Salaries may vary nationwide; however, the range is usually reflective of training, education, and experience. Entry level radiographer starting salaries average in the range of $32,000 to $38,000 annually with the median wage of Radiologic Technologists being $54,000. Experienced technologists and those who have specialized skills in areas such as Ultrasound, MRI and Radiation Therapy earn more. Excellent benefit packages often accompany a higher than average pay scale.
