Laboratory Information Systems

laboratory information systemsMRL provides test ordering through both conventional paper requisitions and electronic means. Some MRL clients still order tests through paper requisitions. The paper requisition accompanies the specimens to our lab where test requests are entered into our Lab Information System. Results are then printed on a printer or fax machine in the client's location.

Most clients now use electronic ordering and results reporting which results in more accurate information flow. Electronic ordering is primarily accomplished through our web-based Atlas product. It is designed to enable clients to order laboratory testing thru AMRL electronically. The client logs into Atlas through a website URL. We also offer electronic ordering and results reporting through Meditech/LSS portal which is available in most Avera-owned clinics. For Eide Bailly clients, a similar system, EMDEON, is used. Functionality and performance are nearly identical.

Once logged in, patient demographic and insurance information is validated by the client and if necessary, corrected or entered. This information needs to be entered only once per patient. Once a test is ordered, medical necessity checking can occur in Atlas and/or EMDEON. This allows for immediate feedback on whether a test will pass Medicare rules checking and thus be reimbursed.

Once the lab order is filed in Atlas and the order is "sent"; the patient information and lab order file electronically into our Lab Information System. When the specimen arrives in our lab it is received and tested. The results flow back electronically in real-time. Results are stored for retrieval at any time.

Electronic orders allow for all ordering and results to flow electronically through a web-based system, eliminating many errors associated with handwriting of orders and reduction in the time it takes to register and process a specimen for testing.
